3 days after the escape from Velkynvelve.
The characters are on their way to Slupludop. Sarith had a vague idea on which way to the Kuo-Toa village, citing that they needed to get a boat to cross darklake to get to any of the other underdark cities. Jimjar reluctantly agreed. Several hours after their camp, they discovered a gruesome scene, a drow caravan that had been attacked violently and viciously. Here they found some undamaged supplies and also found a gravely wounded, but surviving drow who had gone mad. They tried to communicate, but he was all but dead as he just mumbled incoherently. Renna put him down with an arrow. Shackled to the back of one of the giant lizards were dead prisoners, except for one. A female dwarf named Elenore who had been without for food and water for days. They offered to help her as they were trying to escape the darkness as well. She explained that days ago a group of winged creatures that made a horrid buzzing noise had attacked the caravan and killed everyone else. The characters surmised that these must be the same that attacked at Velkynvelve during their escape and that this was the mentioned missing caravan. With a new escapee in tow, they continued their way to darklake.
During their next camp they heard sounds of whispering and scuffling coming from the direction they had come from. Setting up for an ambush they waited to see the wobbling shapes of Topsy and Turvy who they had lost during the escape. A look of disappointment was apparent in Topsy’s face as they scuffled straight through the camp. She muttered to them in a flippant tone as she went by “I wouldn’t stay here long, the Mistress Ilvara is barely an hour behind us.” Panicked, the group gathered quickly and followed the two deep gnomes into the darkness interrupting their rest.
Pushing through the sleepiness they came to a weak looking Zurkwood bridge. Spanning a chasm and into the darkness, they could not see the other side with their limited light source. A great advantage they figured, if they were willing to cross without knowing where it led. Sarith pushed forward figuring Ilvara was a greater issue than the bridge before them. The bridge did its job one last time. After they all crossed, Renna cut the rope on the bridge and Ekko set it afire for good measure, buying them some breathing room from their pursuers.
“You fool!” hissed Renna to Ekko. “You just gave them a better chance at finding which way we went!”
“I just want to make sure they can’t follow us across!” He retorted.
“You think that an Priestess of Lolth can’t find a way across without the bridge? Now it’s just obvious which way we went.”
The fugitives continued their way through the tunnel. It continued one way with no side passages and did so for what seemed an eternity. Deciding to rest after having the quick retreat the previous rest, they kept watch listening for any signs of trouble. Luckily, none had found them. The tunnel narrowed into a slim passage barely wide enough for 2 across and before them was a mass of spider webs for as far as they could see. Knowing they literally burned their bridge behind them, they decided they must force their way through. Keeping an eye for the web spinners, they started to hack into the darkness. Even with a watch standing behind the ones cutting the webs, the spiders managed to quickly and silently descend upon their surprised victims. The battle was quick and the party managed to defeat the 4 giant spiders, but not without a victim. The already weakened dwarf, Elenore, had taken a nasty bite and despite her natural resistance to poison came close to dying before the ranger, Renna used her magic to heal the dwarf.
(Hilarity ensued as everyone tried to stabilize her and not one person including NPC’s could stabilize her! I gave in a little as the ranger Renna just reached level 2 and we decided that the ranger had discovered a sense of power within herself and worked magic through her hands to heal the poor dwarf)
The webs continued on and the group cut for nearly an hour more before it cleared out. When the tunnel finally opened up it was into a large cavern filled with various fungi and it had a floor of mud that varied in depth from ankle to waist deep. The cavern stretched nearly a quarter mile across and nearly as high. The ceiling was infused with a massive amount of the Farezress that they had only seen once before. This gave a significant amount of light and gave the place a warm feeling. The fungi grew along the edges and created a border around the “mud flats”. The lighter and shorter members had more trouble and movement was slow. The wizard decided to use ray of frost to cool sections of the mud and create a path that allowed a bit more freedom from the slop that held them to a crawl. Jimjar quickly challenged anyone at a bet that he would be the first across this cavern and suddenly darted off into the mud. Elenore accepted and took off as well. Smiles abound all the faces of the party as the darkness and dreariness of the underdark subsided for a bit.
They had let their guard down and were unaware that they were being watched the entire time. A group of Kuo-Toa rushes from the sides running on the top of the mud. Hurling their spears a few hitting the unsuspecting characters. Renna realized that they were at a serious disadvantage and that perhaps surrendering would be a better option for getting them into Slupludop than fighting them. One by one the party agreed and each let down their guard. All but Derendil had surrendered, but the Kuo-Toa quickly overtook him and netted him down.
